    RATS

NEWSFLASH: RATS heading to Tas Champs

Graeme Caudry, Monday, 15 September 2008

The Tasmanian Championships are being held on the Mersey River on the 13th and 14th of December

A bunch of senior RATS are heading over for a weekend of whitewater racing! If you are interested in joining the fun, then let me know ASAP so that we can help with logistics and see how the Melbourne Canoe Club can support this outing.
The Mersey river is a welcome step up from the Yarra and much easier water than Penrith. Its probably a similar difficulty to the Goulburn River but with more features.
    Cheers,
    Warwick Draper

Are you Australia's next sporting champion?

Peter Grant, Wednesday, 13 August 2008

The Australian Sports Commission have released eTID, an online electronic talent identification tool that is simple to use, free and allows anyone (aged 12-29) to assess their sporting potential.

eTID is the brainchild of the Australian Sports Commission's successful National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program which seeks to identify and develop Australia's future sporting talent. This interactive website allows users to enter in results for a series of simple 'home based' performance tests and measurements which can be used to help identify athletes for selection in NTID development programs.

Accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime, eTID provides opportunities for aspiring or current athletes and even former elite athletes looking to start a new sport. The General Tests section caters for would-be champions aged 12-25 whilst the Sport Specific and Elite Athlete sections will consider athletic hopefuls up to the age of 29.

If your results are identified as above average you will be encouraged you to visit a Talent Assessment Centre (TAC) to have your results verified. After assessment, you may then be able to enter the elite sporting system, where you could be supported with coaching, equipment and travel.

    vale Damon Bonney

Peter Grant, Wednesday, 6 August 2008

    28.07.83 - 04.08.2008

It is with much sadness we note the recent death (August 4th) of Damon Bonney, son of John and Helen Bonney, at the age of 25. Damon died in his sleep at home.

For those that knew Damon and his family, they are stalwarts of the kayaking community, having competed in both slalom and wildwater events. Damon will be much missed and our sympathy is extended to his family and friends.

    MCC AGM & Social Event

Graeme Caudry, Sunday, 27 July 2008

If you read just one email in detail this year please make it this one!!

    Dear MCC Member

The MCC club has now bee in existence for just over two years.  We have had a huge impact on the canoeing landscape in Victoria and have made our presence felt across Australia.  There is not anyone involved in Slalom Canoeing who does not know our colors and logo.  They know it stand for action and development.
The current committee are determined that we do not stagnate and result on our terrific start.  A sub-committee has developed a strategic plan to guide our development over the coming years.
Any club is only as good as the contribution and support of its members.  The MCC is very fortunate with the support we receive but we cannot that it for granted.
We have our AGM meeting coming up on Sunday August 3rd at 4pm as well as the meeting we will have cheese and biscuits for a social chat.  Videos & photos will be on show building our readiness for watching Warwick in the Olympics a week or so later.  We have a video to show from the last Olympics.
The committee works on your behalf for the whole year we would appreciate your attendance and input into shaping our future for the club on this occasion.  We are a community organisation and we need to share common goals.  A group has been working on a strategic plan to guide the future development of the club.
The Strategic Plan is attached which will be discussed on the night.  Please read and consider it from your perspective.  Please think of ways you could be assist in making the vision become a reality.
As you will see it is our intent to set up a number of working groups or sub-committee to support particular aspects of the clubs operation and development.  For this to work we will need the support of members to assist in these working groups.  We will be electing only the Convenors of these groups at the AGM.  Along with the Executive positions (President, Treasurer, Secretary) they will form the committee to meet every 2 months.
    These groups will be:
    • Coaching (Development)
    • Coaching (High Performance)
    • Officials & Events
    • Promotions, Marketing & Sponsorship
    • Assets & Facilities
    • Communications incl Web
    • Social & non Competitive
I look forward to seeing you on the 4th.  Please pass this onto other members of your family and other friends.

    Graeme Caudry,  President

The Snits Olympics were held on Thursday the 24th of July with over 31 athletes in attendance!

Gates were coloured and numbered and the atmosphere was tense as all the athletes knew what was at stake.

Congratulations to all who took part, the official helpers, spectators and in particular Waz, who just days before leaving for Beijing was able to organise the event. Best of luck at the Olympics Waz - we will all be cheering for you!

Finally congratulations to all who participated at the Snits Olympics. Full results will be available on Monday. Those in the 'A' section progressed into a final of 10 based on their handicapped time from their first run. Big River Results

Graeme Caudry, Thursday, 24 July 2008

Thank you to the forty eight paddlersand their families that made the trip up to Big River last weekend and helped make the event such a success. Forty eight paddlers is certainly an excellent turnout and must come close to a record in recent years.

    Dear Paddling Families
It was great that Waz could join us just a few weeks out from his Olympic trip and that so many other senior paddlers (Jack, Phil, Chris and Scott) made the trip to support the event. Their presence at these events and their willingness to share their experience I know is greatly appreciated by the younger paddlers.
A huge debt of gratitude must also be paid to Roy for towing the slalom trailer up and back, for designing the course and then, with Max,  bush bashing on the opposite bank all Saturday afternoon to erect the course (often knee deep in chilly water!).
It was  really encouraging to see so many junior paddlers turn up to attempt Big River for the first time.  There were several acts of courage on the day but the award must go to Lucy Walsh for whom Big River was her first competitive event, perhaps having decided that the Yarra Series was just too easy !!  It was also great to see Sarah and Claire back in their boats after a period of absence  and we look forward to their continued appearances at future events.
Thank you to all the people who volunteered to help and I apologise to anyone who wanted to help but did not get a job.  I should have remembered to say  that all judging stations can always do with extra support.  Please, at the next event,  just walk up to a judging station and tell them you want to help, you'll certainly be welcomed.
The results for the event were compiled by our dedicated compiling team of Graeme, Heather and Ruth ably supported by runners in the absence of radios.  These results are now attached but it must be remembered that they are not the only measure of success for many of the younger paddlers.  Simply completing the course and attempting the gates is a major achievement.
Finally, there were a couple of items found at the end of the event including one camping chair (green "wild country"), one new looking hand saw (bright orange handle "Bahco Prizecut") and one picnic fork with a blue handle.  I have all items in my possession and looking forward to returning them to their rightful owners.
    Regards
    Andrew Fegan

Peter Grant, Monday, 16 June 2008

The results for the Griffiths Park event are now available through the calendar.

Thank you to all those that helped run the event through the day. This was a very successful competition - it ran smoothly and with great humour. I have to compliment the paddlers for their energy on the course and also for working with the officials to promptly appear at start and keep the race running well.

Congratulations also to our three lucky winners of the Solution paddling gear supplied by our Event Sponsors. It was great to be able to acknowledge our paddlers and we thank Solution for their support.
